What sounded at first like a joke computers could get confused by the date Jan. 1, 2000, and skip backward a century to 1900 is turning into a scary mania with seemingly endless consequences.

A pattern of snowballing exaggeration has begun, fed by random alarming news, such as announcements by two airlines that they may ground their planes around New Year's Day 2000.
