Cossacks' return to service in Russia brings pride, fear Revival of elite group to help fight crime worries human rights activists

In bygone centuries, the Cossacks were loyal servants of Russia's
czars who struck fear in the hearts of their victims. They had a
deserved reputation as expert horsemen and merciless killers.
This tradition-steeped warrior caste soon will ride again.
St. Petersburg officials plan to use Cossacks to patrol city
parks and assist regular police in fighting crime a variation of
the Guardian Angels, Russo-style.
"If there is organized crime, why not an organized defense?"
said Arkady Kramarev, leader of the 2,000-strong Cossack community
of St. Petersburg and member of the local legislature.
