In 1903, when the "petticoated press" was a novelty, 17-year-old
Edna Ferber became Appleton's first woman reporter. And, but for her
selfish demand for an innovation called vacation, she might have
stayed there.
But she pressed until an editor said yes.
"Two a year," he said. "For six months each and starting right
now."
And so Ferber moved to The Milwaukee Journal, where for 31/2 years
she covered the city's underside on police and court beats. She was
still a tender 22 when she became ill and returned to Appleton, where
