DNR wants wetland fund $1 million would be used to restore 100 acres each year

A $1 million fund should be created to restore up to 100 acres of wetlands each year in Wisconsin, the state Department of Natural Resources says in a proposal to be released Wednesday.

Municipalities and conservation groups could apply for grants from the fund to help pay costs of re-establishing saturated soil at previously drained agricultural fields or even of attempts at creating new wetlands.

The DNR also is seeking authority to begin a voluntary compensation program that could replace some of the wetlands lost each year to development, particularly in Dane and Waukesha counties and ...
