Homeowners in Waukesha, De Pere and two dozen other eastern Wisconsin communities could face huge increases in water bills in the next decade as utilities are forced to comply with federal regulations limiting the amount of radium in drinking water.

Residential water bills in Waukesha could triple in future years to pay the $70 million price of building and operating a water softening plant for 20 years, said Brian Barrett, general manager of the city's water utility.
