Ernie Pyle was a very good writer who lived a very sad life. That
is the picture James Tobin draws in his well-crafted and fast-
moving
biography.
According to Tobin, Pyle was tortured by chronic if often minor
maladies and obsessed with failure. He never enjoyed the celebrity
his columns brought him.
For Pyle, the work was what mattered. He sacrificed his health,
his marriage and, finally, his life for it.
Tobin seems suited by both occupation and education for the role
