Home tours have a history here as rich as the ore that made the
architecture so splendid in the first place.
A story goes that in the 1800s, a group of Iowans proposed a most
outlandish home tour, an idea so grandiose it must have been thought
up over strong drink late at night. They wanted to buy the Galena
home where Ulysses S. Grant had resided briefly before the Civil
War, put it on to a huge boat, float it down the Mississippi River
and take it on tour up the Atlantic seaboard ...
