If there were a serious outbreak of hepatitis A in Wisconsin, the state and federal government would be unable to effectively fight it because of a nationwide shortage of immune globulin, a state health worker said Thursday.

Receiving an injection of immune globulin, also known as gamma globulin, within 14 days after exposure to hepatitis A provides temporary immunity right away to the disease, said Jim Kazmierczak, an epidemiologist with the state's Bureau of Public Health.

"It's really a bad situation to have such a short supply," Kazmierczak said. "That's the only line of defense. ...
