Reports of multiple personality disorder have surged in the past 10 years, and psychiatrists hotly debate whether the increase is due to increased recognition of the malady or misdiagnosis in people highly susceptible to suggestion.

"No one knows for sure" what the true incidence is, said Jon Gudeman, a psychiatrist who is director of the Milwaukee County Mental Health Complex.
