James Richard was sure about one thing.

Persistently, but clearly and concisely, he explained that he wanted to talk about his grandfather. His grandfather, John A. Smith, he said, was born into slavery and struggled to survive as a freeman in the antebellum, "new" South.

"I have a story to tell," Richard said emphatically. "And I don't have much time left." Richard, at 71, is relatively young to remember a slave; many slave descendants are in their 90s or long dead.
