Pepper is arguably the most widely used spice in the world. Indigenous to the Malabar coast of India, it also has been cultivated in Southeast Asia since early history. The taste for pepper is responsible for the overland trade between India and Europe, and it was used as a medium of exchange in ancient Greece and Rome.

It's no wonder that both salt and pepper were such esteemed commodities in the ancient world. Salt, aside from enhancing the flavor of all foods, was used to preserve meats and fish. Pepper could disguise the tainted flavor of meats that were a bit off and make them ...
