A multiparty bloc led by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya
Janata Party emerged today as the top vote-getter of India's
parliamentary election, coming within about two dozen seats of a
majority in the 545-member lower house of Parliament. Party leaders
promptly embarked on a determined search for the allies needed to
form the next government of the world's largest democracy.
