Attorney Godfrey played key role when Kikkoman arrived in state

Thomas G. Godfrey, who was instrumental in helping the Japanese start up Kikkoman Foods in Walworth in the early 1970s, nearly played a different role in U.S.-Japanese relations a quarter-century earlier.

He was training with the U.S. Army on Maui for an invasion of Japan, but the attack never occurred because America dropped two atomic bombs on its enemy.

Years later Godfrey, who had become friends with other Kikkoman executives, had a number of "interesting conversations" about the war, said his daughter, Sarah Cook.
