When consumers reach for bread, pasta, corn meal and cereal on grocery shelves, they can now count on getting more of an important ingredient: folic acid.

Since Jan. 1, food manufacturers have been required by the Food and Drug Administration to fortify these and many other products with folic acid, one of the B vitamins, which plays an important role in the body's central nervous system.
