Paralympics basketball team wins by forfeit U.S. gets victory when Iraqis fail to show

The opening game for the United States men's wheelchair basketball team turned into a non-event when the Iraqi contingent failed to arrive for the Paralympic Games on Friday night.

"They had not arrived in the Paralympic Village as of 4 p.m. Friday," said Steve Goldberg, spokesman for the Atlanta Paralympic Organizing Committee. "We are working to determine their whereabouts."

He did not know the number of Iraqi athletes scheduled to compete in the Paralympics. The Iraqi basketball team, in the country's first scheduled competition, forfeited its game to the U.S. for failing to appear, ...
