When Joseph Ruzicka was a graduate student at New York University, his professor in 19th-century painting, Gert Schiff, told him that if he wanted a proper understanding of German art of that era, he would have to go to Milwaukee.

Schiff could not have suspected that Ruzicka, even then an ardent advocate of Teutonic art, would take his advice to the point of becoming the curator of prints and drawings at the Milwaukee Art Museum and living daily with its collections.

Nor could the eminent art historian have guessed that Ruzicka would ultimately play a role in expanding the Milwaukee ...
