WRITER OF MORE THAN 70 WORKS Recognition blooms at last for black composer George Walker's Whitmanesque `Lilacs' wins a Pulitzer Prize

A rash of crank calls had been interrupting George Walker at his
music since last year, so when the telephone rang April 9 as the
73-year-old composer labored over an organ piece, he snatched it up
expecting to hear the maddeningly familiar click of a hangup.
Instead, a friendly voice informed him that he had just won the 1996
Pulitzer Prize for music.
It was a triumphant moment for the lanky and laconic Walker, a
not-quite-overnight sensation more than 60 years in the making and
the first black composer to win a Pulitzer music prize in the 80
years of awards.
