Alan Greenspan, an inflation fighter credited with helping the
nation achieve moderate economic growth, was overwhelmingly confirmed
by the Senate Thursday to a third term as head of the nation's
central bank.
The 91-7 vote, extending the 70-year-old Republican economist's
term as Federal Reserve chairman by four more years, ended a
procedural standoff that had held up his confirmation for three
