FitzGerald Civil War Collection of 1861-'65 books and documents, one of the largest in Wisconsin; a music center seating 1,350; a modern theater arts building, upon which an addition for other arts programs and a chapel are being built this year; up-to-date athletic facilities for men and women; and a 60-acre "outdoor laboratory" nine miles from campus. Of those, 4,600 live and work in Waukesha and Milwaukee counties.; College namesake disputed Some historians dispute Carroll College's namesake. While Eleazar Root, a founding father of the school, suggested it was named after Charles Carroll, who was allegedly the only noted signer of the Declaration of Independence without a college named in his honor, others later wondered about Root's true intentions. Some researchers believe Root might have actually named the school after a close friend, Daniel Carroll, whom he tried to recruit as president when the school was losing financial and student support late in 1847. Carroll was a well-to-do Presbyterian from Brooklyn who Root hoped would help secure strong reserves for the school. Naming a school after a real or potential benefactor was a common practice in college founding, according to historian Ellen Langill, in her book "Carroll College: The First Century, 1846-1946." Langill, who was an assistant professor of history at Carroll during the book's publication in 1980, now teaches history at the University of Wisconsin Center-Waukesha County.
