New satellite over the Pacific expected to improve forecasting GOES 9 will watch where our weather comes from

U.S. weather forecasting took a giant step forward this week with
the final positioning of the second of a new generation of weather
satellites that can provide images and atmospheric profiles so
detailed it can spot clouds as small as 2 miles across.
The new satellite, GOES 9, will also improve three- to five-day
forecasts, offer jazzier images to viewers of TV weather news and
for the first time peer out into the developing weather patterns of
areas of the Pacific west of the United States.
