The Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party today got back on
track to form India's new government after a balky regional ally,
which had withheld its support, formally committed to back a BJP-led
coalition.
Letters of support from the largest ally in the BJP-led bloc,
as well as from smaller partners also based in southern Tamil Nadu
state, brought the BJP's tally to 264 seats in the 545-member
Parliament, nine short of an absolute majority. The BJP alliance
moved even closer to being able to win a vote of confidence, partly
