MIKE ELLIS, the feisty state Senate majority leader, received his earliest lessons in politics in the Neenah household in which he grew up. The simple, two-story frame house sheltered his parents, one older and six younger siblings, and an aunt who moved in after her husband died.

"Order was very important when you had 11 people," says Ellis, who in that setting learned about building coalitions and keeping order. In running the Senate, "order is still important. I know right where everything is."
