Few things in life can evoke the feeling of desperation more than a lost dog.

I've had that feeling too many times, although one time is too many.

Years ago, against instructions, a workman left our back gate unlatched, and Buck, my now 13-year-old golden retriever, wandered off. After hours of frantic searching and phone calls, we located and recovered Buck, who was being held in the canine equivalent of a cellblock filled with other strays at the Humane Society.
