It may have been the strangest five minutes of David Lenz's life.

As new parents will do, he checked his newborn son Sam's fingers and toes one, two, three, four, five. . . . Everything seemed fine as his wife, Rosemarie, kept asking, "Is he all right?"

But the hospital staff was silent as they examined the baby boy for moments that stretched long and painful for the Lenzes.
