Waterfowl proposal on hold; Closing of Big Lake area delayed until 2009

It looks as if implementation of a controversial plan to close waterfowl hunting in Wisconsin's Big Lake area of the Mississippi River will be delayed until 2009.

The plan is part of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service's revised "preferred alternative" management plan for the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge.

The new plan still includes closing waterfowl hunting in the Big Lake area of Pool 4 of the river, between Nelson and Alma, although the boundaries have been revised and implementation has been delayed for more study
