The property containing the Yerkes Observatory, a monument to astronomy that towers over Geneva Lake, will be sold to a developer proposing to build a 100-room resort and 73 homes on the land in Williams Bay.

The announcement Wednesday by the University of Chicago brings the future of the observatory and its historic telescopes into a slightly clearer focus and sets the framework for an upcoming debate over plans for development on nearly 45 acres of pristine woodlands.
