FIRST COURSE; Times changing at German tables

Germany Meike's reaction said it all.
Informed that her mother my cousin Gisela would be fixing a
traditional German meal for her American visitors on Sunday, Meike
wrinkled her nose and groaned.
"I don't like traditional German food," said the 23-year-old
college student.
"She'd rather eat Chinese or Thai or Italian," said her mother
with a smile of bemused resignation. "And she prefers store pickles
to her mom's."
Not so for myself or my 21-year-old stepdaughte...
