The Bon-Ton Stores chain will double in size with the $1.1 billion
purchase of the 142 stores of Saks' Northern department store group,
headquartered in downtown Milwaukee.
It will be the second big growth spurt for the York, Pa.-based Bon-
Ton, which acquired the 69-store Elder-Beerman chain in October 2003.
Bon-Ton has 139 department stores and two furniture stores in 16
