The money market mutual fund, a plain-vanilla product traditionally used merely as a place to park spare change, has become a tasty option for investors lately, thanks to an unusual alignment of interest rates.

With cash gushing in, such funds are poised to reach the record asset levels of 2001, according to data from the Investment Company Institute, a trade organization for mutual funds.
