REVIEW; Syncopation' a love match; Engaging actors, exuberant dance are perfect marriage

It's a sign of our times that unabashed love stories are few and far between in contemporary theater. Maybe we are too cool or cynical or ironic to feel comfortable with a tale of two unlikely adults falling in love and overcoming impediments to being together.

With its first production of the new season, Renaissance Theaterworks makes a bet that romance still lingers in the hearts of us 21st-century sophisticates. The gamble, a two-character comedy titled "Syncopation," pays off with a big jackpot. The show opened Friday night in Renaissance's new home at the Broadway Theatre Center.
