Poet and associate professor Orlando Ricardo Menes is the son of Cuban parents and had a great-great-grandfather who was Chinese. Menes was born in Peru and lived there until a coup d'etat forced his family to flee to Miami. He earned degrees in art from the University of Florida and a doctorate in English at the University of Illinois- Chicago.
