Guernsey herd brought Lurvey international attention; He took honors at 1979 World Dairy Expo

Both a son of and the father of farmers, Lester "Les" Lurvey viewed his dairy herd not only as his occupation but his hobby.

This year, despite a disabling illness, he cut and baled 400 acres of alfalfa hay on his Baraboo farm, said his granddaughter Nichelle Martin.

Lurvey lived on and farmed land in the Waukesha County Town of Ottawa, where he was born, until he moved to Baraboo in 1969 for a farm of his own.

On Tuesday, he died at 84.
