plain black. The women of Vermeer are as prudently respectable.
Attending to their mail on sunlit afternoons, secure in domesticity,
they seem paragons of calm.
The almost-modern society they conjure seems decent and
business-like, but whatever balm these pictures spread, Holland in
the Golden Age was not a place of peace. The land was torn by
conflict, sackings and bitter condemnations. The war began in
Flanders on the night of Aug. 20-21, 1566, and then spread through
