Stephen Mikulas did not think of it as a heroic act, but his family never forgot the story of the day he brought food to the prisoners at the Mhldorf concentration camp in Mhldorf, Germany.

Mikulas was a forced laborer, brought to Germany from his native Austria-Hungary in 1940. He lived in the town of Mhldorf, which allowed him somewhat greater freedom, within the limits of work and curfew. He also got to meet some Jewish people, who were forced to do day labor in the town.
