Faraday: the spark of genius

Consider the case of Michael Faraday, a man of little formal education, son of a blacksmith, trained as a bookbinder, whose superior intellect and persistent curiosity led him to become one of the greatest scientists of his age.

Faraday's rise from poverty is made more impressive by the fact that it took place in England just after the Napoleonic Wars.

Highly stratified London society was in the grip of industrial revolution, with a growing gulf between the haves and have-nots.
