Color-field painting is again making a splash

Glowing veils of water-thinned acrylic pigments scintillate like
interlocking butterfly wings on the rectangle of unprimed canvas.
Carefully poured onto a flat surface by New York artist Helen
Frankenthaler, the translucent colors spread out onto and saturate
the untreated fabric, achieving a subtle mixture of delicacy and
spontaneity.
The title of the work is "Tutti Frutti." The pouring took place in
1966, when Frankenthaler was in the vanguard of an influential art ...
