Global census discovers numerous new marine species

Study brings together more than 300 scientists to document ocean life

Washington -- The first global census of marine life is yielding startling discoveries of ocean life and dramatically expanding the number of known aquatic species.

The 10-year, $1 billion census, which is bringing together more than 300 scientists from 53 countries, expects to identify 5,000 previously unknown fish species and hundreds of thousands of other types of marine life by the time it ends in 2010.
