Overfishing depleted horseshoe crab population, scientists say

Number of shorebirds migrating to bay has dropped sharply

Mispillion Harbor, Del. -- Charlie Auman piloted his green forklift carefully into the rising tide of Delaware Bay, with a 48- cubic-foot cardboard box stuck on the end, waiting to be filled with the day's catch. His brother, Lenny, stood in their 25-foot open work boat, up to his knees in mud-brown horseshoe crabs, about 800 in all.
