When Tim McGurty lost his life in the war, the public send-off was a 3-inch article deep inside his hometown Milwaukee newspaper.

The first paragraph couldn't have been more matter-of-fact: "Army Cpl. Timothy A. McGurty, 19, has been killed in Vietnam."
