Exploring art, Polish identity

"I didn't know Leonardo da Vinci was Polish."
This amazing statement has been made to me more than once during
the well-attended run of "Leonardo da Vinci and the Splendor of
Poland" at the Milwaukee Art Museum.
Of course, da Vinci wasn't Polish. He was born April 15, 1452, in
the Tuscan village of Vinci. He died in 1519 in the service of
Francis I of France.
His celebrated painting, "Lady with an Ermine," was purchased by a
member of Poland's distinguished Czartoryski family in Italy in ...
