The art of espalier

An apple tree whose branches have been painstakingly trained in
the shape of a fan -- or a diamond, a palm frond or even a candelabra
-- can be found flat against a fence or wall.
That's espalier, a way of growing a tree in basically two
dimensions. It's both artistic and practical: The effect is eye-
catching, plus it's a way to get a tree into a small space and open
up the branches to the sun so fruit production will increase.
