If you ask the retired colonel he will tell you, charmingly,
persuasively, that there was one battle that saved the United States
of America, that prevented the lands south of the Great Lakes from
becoming part of the nation called Canada.
And that often-ignored battle, the land and naval engagement that
kept the Canadian border at the parallel where it is today, is the
