'Black Square' seen as start of renewal of the Hermitage
By IRINA TITOVA Associated Press
Monday, June 24, 2002
St. Petersburg, Russia -- A 1913 painting of a plain black square
is on display at the famed Hermitage Museum, and the director said it
marked the renewal of Russia's readiness to protect its cultural
heritage.
"Black Square," by avant-garde artist Kazemir Malevich, was given
to the Hermitage after being saved from auction in April by a Russian
businessman who paid $1 million to buy it for Russia's Culture
Ministry. The painting was expected to bring as much as $10 million
at auction.
