Prescription drug makers target consumers with ad campaigns

Prescription drug advertising, especially on television, soared
between 1996 and 2000 to nearly $2.5 billion a year in the United
States as drug companies increasingly aimed their messages at
ordinary people instead of doctors, according to a study released
Wednesday.
Critics say direct-to-consumer marketing of prescription drugs is
a significant contributor to soaring costs for health care, but
pharmaceutical companies say the advertising leads to better ...
