Common bonds could unite nations

India and Pakistan, both nuclear powers, stare eyeball to
bloodshot eyeball across a common border.
The military buildup and exchange of fire on both sides is
alarming and, even apart from the threat of nuclear war, the stakes
are enormous: The two countries' populations account for close to one-
fifth of the human race, and about half their people live in poverty.
The cost of sophisticated weaponry for both armies diverts
desperately needed resources.
