Washington -- Faced with mounting criticism of his Middle East policy, President Bush announced Thursday that he was sending his special envoy, retired Gen. Anthony Zinni, back to the region next week to try to stanch the daily bloodshed in Israel and the Palestinian territories.

"I'm deeply concerned about the tragic loss of life and escalating violence in the Middle East," Bush told reporters in the White House Rose Garden.
