John XXIII was greatest pope, scholar says

Thomas Cahill has no doubt that John XXIII, a man the princes of
the Catholic Church anticipated would simply warm the throne of St.
Peter warm for a few years, is the greatest pope in history.
Despite the low expectations, John XXIII convened the Second
Vatican Council in 1962, a convocation that dramatically changed the
shape of the church. But that achievement was not his greatest
accomplishment.
