Cries for help pierce England's thick fog, but rescuers could not

London -- Trapped on a beach by the tide, a man hoisted his son onto his shoulders as water rose to his neck, while rescuers who could hear his cries tried desperately to find them in thick fog.

Stewart Rushton, 51, and his 9-year-old son, Adam, drowned a few hundreds yards from where rescuers were looking for them, after a series of increasingly frantic cell phone calls.

"Some of the officers could hear him shouting but felt helpless because they could not get to him. ...
