Declaring Independence From the Declaration

To inculcate democratic values in the public school students of
New Jersey, the state's Assembly has decreed -- by a vote of 50 to 16
-- that every day, all students must recite not only the Pledge of
Allegiance but also this section of the Declaration of Independence:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created
equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain
unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the
