India's Other Music; Performance to Feature Sounds of Country's South
|
For most Americans, Indian music means Ravi Shankar, who came to
prominence in the West principally because of his connection with the
Beatles. Those who have more recently investigated music from the
subcontinent may have encountered Nusrat Fatah Ali Khan, the
acclaimed Pakistani singer who died in 1997. Both those musicians
represent the Hindustani, or north Indian, tradition, the Indian
style best known in the United States. But there's also Karnatak
(south Indian) music, which will get a rare local hearing Sunday at
the University of Maryland's Tawes Theater.
